Istanbul
After Bucarest we continued our trip to Istanbul. We stayed overnight in Stara Zagora in Bulgaria since it was too far to drive this distance in one day. The mountains of Bulgaria are probably very nice, but we drove through them in the dark, since Bogdan didn't really want to let us go.. It was a good opportunity to test our Warn lights.
The crossing of the border to Turkey took us more than 2 hours; we had to pass one of the more than 100 gates first, after which our car had to be X-rayed. But first we had to unload all our luggage. Then we had to arrange a visum at another gate, much further away. This could only be payed with cash so we had to find an ATM first. After this we thought we were through, but when we wanted to pass the final gate we had to go all the way back again, to collect a stamp that said our luggage was checked.. Then finally: Turkey!
We spent two days in Istanbul, below a photo impression:

After Istanbul we drove to Iran in 3 days. We passed nice mountain area's, in South-East Anatolia up to a height of 3000 meters.
At a stop in Silvan we got help finding a hotel from a local shoe salesman. He told us we were the first tourists in town since a couple of Spanish ones 3 years earlier. We got a warm in the hotel and half the town knew we were there within in hour; a lot of people wanted to chat with us and we were offered a lot of tea.
At a kebab meal with a group of locals they told us about their Kurdic area and identity. On the 15th of february it was exactly 15 years ago that their leader, Öcalan, was captured. He was sentenced to death but this was changed to a life long imprisonment after pressure of the European Union. Every year the 15th of february is a protest day, and all the shops and restaurants are closed. Later we read in the news there had been some riots in city's that we had passed the day before. We did see a lot of police and armed vehicles, which was normal until recently since there was a continuous state of emergency. In Hakkari, where we are now, it's been quite, fortunately, maybe because it snowed quite a lot.
We're about to drive to the border with Iran. We choose to go through the Esendere border in the South of Turkey as we heard things can be difficult at the Dogubayazit border crossing; some people had to arrange Iranian license plates which took them 2 days and quite some extra money.
We hope we can cross the border without problems! First stop in Iran will be Tabriz.
Kebab with Mehmet in Silvan. We had an interesting discussion about Islam religion, what life is all about in this region. They wanted to know about our religion, we didn't tell them that we are not really religious. Strangely, nobody had ever heard of the book The Bible...
