At the Botswana Namibia border crossing we had the same situation as with the last border crossing: we had to pay the road tax in Namibian dollar or South African rand. Fortunately there was an ATM that worked this time a couple of hundred metres further… We spent the first night in Namibia on a simple campsite to drive on to Waterberg Plateau the following day. We took a steep hiking route there to a great viewing point. We stayed at “Waterberg Wilderness Lodge / Campsite. The owner also had a private game park. We heard that the chance to see white rhinos there was almost 100% so we had no choice… Here also the rhinos were heavily protected against poachers and a ranger kept an eye on the rhinos all day long.
After driving in the park for about half an hour we went out of the car to walk further and there they were in the bush: a male and female rhino! They were huge, the weight of the male was about 3500 kilograms. The ranger kept a close eye on them and slowly they were approaching us. The ranger knew the rhinos so well that he knew exactly what they would do. At some point he thought it would be safer for us to walk backward slowly toward the car, that was about 50 metres away from us. When we walked backward the male rhino suddenly started running towards us. The guard had a long stick and waived this in the air and shouted “stop-stop-stop”, which made the rhino turn around again. After this they slowly approached us, to just a couple of metres from us, very exciting! It was very cool to see these prehistoric looking animals so nearby. We spent about one and a half hours with them and it was one of our coolest wildlife experiences in Africa.

Now that we had spotted almost all the animals we wanted to, we wanted to complete our list and visited a cheetah conservation organisation. Cheetahs are hard to spot in the wild but there are still many of them living in central Namibia. This raises conflicts with farmers who shoot cheetahs to protect their livestock. The organisation we visited adopts cheetahs that wouldn’t survive in the wild, for example baby cheetahs after their mother got killed. They also search for solutions and try to work together with farmers, there was a programme for example in which Anatolian Sheppard dogs are trained to protect cattle from cheetahs.

After the cheetah experience we drove to Etosha NP, but first we had to find a place where we could watch the first Worldcup match of The Netherlands! We found a very good spot, Etotongwe in Outjo and watched the incredible victory on Spain with a lot of Namibians who supported us as fanatic as we did, like many Africans by the way!

In Etosha we met Wiep’s parents who were on an overland trip from Cape Town to Victoria Falls. We made them a very nice meal with beef filet on the braai and baked potatoes and had a nice evening around the campfire.
Etosha NP is a different park than any other park in Africa due to the huge salt pan: it’s dry, there are wide views and special colours in the sky because of the reflection of the salt. There are some waterholes where you can go and sit and see the wildlife coming toward you. On one evening there were 9 black rhinos at the waterhole, very special. They made strange loud noises. It was a great final of all the nice parks we’ve visited in Africa.

When we drove towards the exit gate of the park we got another bonus and saw a group of lions with little ones eating and protecting the giraf they had killed a couple of hours earlier..

We drove to Swakopmund with one goal: watching the second match of The Netherlands. The city was desolate and very quite in this winter period. But the second victory we got to see in a German bar was great, 3-2!!!

We went to Spitzkoppe, one of the most beautiful places in Namibia and one of the coolest sites we stayed overnight during this trip. The rocks colouring red at sunset and sunrise were fabulous and the African sky at night was once again amazing. Here are the pictures:

The last spot to visit before we would drive the last bit to Cape Town was not a bad one at all: the dune area at Sossusvlei. When we arrived there a storm got started and would not stop anymore. We wanted to climb dune 45 of course but with this sandstorm that was almost impossible. We waited a day and watched some Worldcup matches but the next day we decided to go up the dune anyway. We couldn’t bring our camera because of all the sand but we managed to take some surrealistic looking pictures with our phone. Our shadows were visible in the sand that was blown off the dune by the wind..
In Sossusvlei and Deadvlei there was the same sandstorm but we didn’t want to miss it, they are very special places.

And than there was the moment to…drive the last country of this trip….South-Africa!!!! The last kilometres!
