Vanuit Oost-Turkije reden we Iran binnen.
Our original plan was to drive to Turkey and take the ferry from there to Egypt. Because of the situation in Egypt this was impossible; the ferry didn't operate anymore, the Dutch government advised not to travel to Egypt, and foreign 4 wheel drive cars were not allowed into the country because of danger of rebels wanting to violently take over the car.
Driving through West-Africa was not an option; too many unsafe or unstable countries (Mauritania, Mali, Niger, CAR, Libia, Nigeria...).
The only possibility to drive to Cape Town overland was to bypass Egypt so we did that! We drove through Europe into Turkey. From the south-east of Turkey we entered Iran. In the south of Iran we then took the ferry from Bander-e-Lengeh to Dubai. From the Emirates we drove into Saudi-Arabia, where we drove all the way from east to west to take another ferry in Jeddah that brought us to Port Sudan. From there the African part of our trip started and we drove through the following countries: Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia and South-Africa.
Looking back we are very pleased with the more than 5000 extra kilometers we drove through Iran, the Emirates and Saudi-Arabia since this was a fantastic part of our trip that we didn't want to have missed.
Fortunately we applied successfully for the visa of the countries that we absolutely wanted to have before departure and had them just in time, namely for Iran, Saudi-Arabia and Sudan.
The date of departure was 1 February 2014 and we arrived in Cape Town on 23 June 2014.
